Campbell Soup’s Continuous Replenishment Program: Evaluation and Enhanced Inventory Decision Rules¤

چکیده
Campbell Soup’s Continuous Replenishment (CR) program is a novel innovation designed to improve the e¢ciency of inventory management throughout the supply chain. With CR: (1) retailers pay a constant wholesale price but continue to participate in consumer promotions; (2) retailers transmit to the supplier daily inventory information, via Electronic Data Interchange (EDI); and (3) the supplier assumes responsibility for managing retailer inventories, i.e. vendor managed inventories (VMI). We develop simple inventory management rules to operate CR, and we test these rules with a simulation using actual demand data provided by Campbell Soup. On this sample we ...nd that retailer inventories were reduced on average by 66% while maintaining or increasing average ...ll rates. This improvement reduces a retailer’s cost of goods sold by approximately 1:2%; which is signi...cant in the low pro...t margin grocery industry. Furthermore, these savings could have been achieved without VMI.

A real-time SPC inventory replenishment system to improve supply chain performances
Inventory replenishment rules contribute significantly to the bullwhip effect and inventory instability in supply chains. Smoothing replenishment rules have been suggested as a mitigation solution for the bullwhip effect but dampening the bullwhip effect might increase inventory instability. This paper evaluates a real-time inventory replenishment system denoted as SPC that utilizes a control c...

This paper aims to evaluate inventory cost of a Two-echelon serial supply chain system under vendor managed inventory program with stochastic demand, and examine the effect of environmental factors on the cost of overall system. For this purpose, we consider a two-echelon serial supply chain with a manufacturer and a retailer. Under Vendor managed inventory program, the decision on inventory ...
متن کاملA Semi-Markov decision problem for proactive and reactive transshipments between multiple warehouses
Lateral transshipments are an effective strategy to pool inventories. We present an exact Semi-Markov decision problem formulation for proactive and reactive transshipments in a multi-location continuous review distribution inventory system with Poisson demand and exponential replenishment lead times. In a numerical study, we investigate the benefits of proactive over different reactive transsh...
متن کاملPrice-Directed Replenishment of Subsets: Methodology and Its Application to Inventory Routing
The idea of price-directed control is to use an operating policy that exploits optimal dual prices from a mathematical programming relaxation of the underlying control problem. We apply it to the problem of replenishing inventory to subsets of products/locations, such as in the distribution of industrial gases, so as to minimize long-run time average replenishment costs. Given a marginal value ...
متن کاملTwo Easy To Apply Solution Procedures To The Determination Of Production-Shipment Policy
This paper deals with the determination of production-shipment policy for an integrated vendor-buyer system. The inventory model contains two decision variables: the replenishment lot size and the number of deliveries. This paper solves the inventory model considering two cases: 1) the replenishment lot size as continuous variable and the number of shipments as discrete variable, and 2) the rep...
